- Review:: 'An eye opening education into improving your pets quality of life This book was recommended by my Aunt who owns a terrier breed. After following the advice in Dr. Pitcairn's book the change in her dog was amazing. His coat is no longer dark and oily but bright and shiny, small sores on his back are gone, his breathe is fresh and the energy that he displays makes him look like a puppy again. I am finishing up the last chapters in the book and look forward to feeding my dogs and cats well balanced, healthy, and tasty meals. With a Labrador, whippet mix, and a bulldog as pets, vet bills can get out of hand and I have noticed that at age eight, my Labrador is acting old despite healthy recreation. I firmly believe the by following Dr. Pitcairn's easy to follow recipes, I will see a significant change in my pet's health. I would strongly recommend that any one with a pet to cares about their health and wants to see them live longer and with significantly less vet bills. If you are one of the millions that believe high quality pet food or vet recommended brands are good for your pet, think again and read this book. You will be shocked to learn that there is a complete void in government regulation in the manufacturing of pet foods and labeling laws are nearly non-existent leaving our pets to the mercy of big corporations that put profits ahead of our pet's health.
- Review:: 'Dr. Pitcairn's New Complete Guide to Natural Health for Dogs and Cats I have found this book very helpful for many things that affect my dogs. I'm so glad I purchased it. I have recommended to many friends.
- Review:: 'My Pet Bible! There is no better advice and help you can get than using this book. His first one I still have, the binding is gone and it is dog earred and the pages loose, but I have marks and all on it and use it all the time. I cannot recommend it more. This book will help you in helping your animals without the use of chemicals, antibiotics and drugs. Do yourself a favor and buy it... and more important, once you do, use it... !! Then, check out your area for a naturopathic vet. You will not be sorry.
- Review:: 'It saved a life I'm looking to add other books to my library, but I'll always keep this book on hand. But I can tell you this story. My neighbor's cat was sent home to die after she had spent about $2,000 at the regular vet. The vet said there was no hope or anything that could be done, and the cat would die within weeks. Its' kidney had pretty much stopped working. I loaned my neighbor Pitcairn's book with the right pages marked, she followed his instructions about changes in diet and adding the right herbs. That was TWO years ago. The cat immediately got better and is extremely healthy now. All the vet said was (after $2,000 of tests, blood work, exams, treatments) "I guess we must have mis-diagnosed her" as his explanation why the cat had regained its health. I told my neighbor she should have told the vet that the cat was cured by lighting candles, casting spells, burning incense, and feeding the cat buffalo droppings
the vet would probably have believed that story more than believing a change in diet and adding herbs saved the cat who he had said had "no hope" after taking all her money.
- Review:: 'Comprehensive on diet & health I'd reviewed the 2nd edition version when I was looking into a more natural diet for my puppies on the advice of my holistic vet. In fact I was using the diet until my youngest started gaining weight and they were worried that the grains were causing the weight gain. I switched to raw meat and pureed veggies instead. Turns out that she was low thyroid. The diets are still heavy on grains. Great for the majority of dogs I'm sure. The upside is that there are nutritional analysis of all the diets included so you know why you're including each of the components. There are also special diets included for allergies, weight loss and gain. I also like the information on various health issues and vaccinosis that is included.
The Authoritative Guide to the Glycemic Index--the Dietary Solution for Lifelong Health:
Book by Jennie Brand-Miller, Thomas M.S. Wolever, Kaye Foster-Powell and Stephen Colagiuri. Marlowe & Company 304 pages Paperback Published 2002-12-10. Description: Forget the high-carb, low-carb debate. The glycemic index (GI)--a measure of carbohydrate quality based on how quickly a food raises blood-glucose (blood sugar) levels--is the dietary key to health, say the authors. Contrary to other diets that treat carbohydrates as all alike, The New Glucose Revolution divides carbos according to their GI into two categories. One is high GI (less desirable): carbohydrates that break down quickly during digestion, leading to fast and high blood-glucose response. Examples are baked potatoes, sports bars, instant rice, corn flakes cereal, and baguettes. The other is low GI (more desirable): carbohydrates that break down slowly during digestion, leading to a gradual glucose release. Examples here are pasta, whole grains, fruit, legumes, and yams. A low-GI diet is especially recommended for people with diabetes, abdominal overweight, and Syndrome X, say the authors, who have strong medical, nutritional-science, and diabetes education credentials. They explain the importance of understanding GI values, how GI is determined, health applications, and how to choose low-GI foods and balance the overall GI load. They give cooking tips, menu ideas, and 47 recipes. A 68-page table gives the GI values of many foods, including brand names. The New Glucose Revolution is recommended for health-conscious readers who want to understand the glycemic index and how to incorporate it into their diet. --Joan Price Description: (Marlowe and Company) Consumer text provides an introduction to the glycemic index and provides tables for more than 800 foods to determine their effect on blood glucose levels. Discusses the benefits of low-GI foods for weight loss, blood sugar control, reduced risk of heart disease, and management of Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes. Previous edition: c2002. Softcover.
- Review:: 'THE NEW GLUCOSE REVOLUTION WHENEVER I SEE A BOOK I WANT, I GO TO AMOZON WHERE THE PRICE IS ALWAYS RIGHT. THE BOOK WAS VERY INFORMATIVE AS I WAS SURE IT WOULD BE.
- Review:: 'Mega Weight loss! My doctor recommended this book for weight loss. By keeping my foods at 55 or below on the glucemic index, I've went from 181 pounds to 120, size 18 Womens to 6 petite. Marina Kushner Author The Truth About Caffeine: How Companies That Promote It Deceive Us and What We Can Do about It
- Review:: 'Mega Weight loss! My doctor recommended this book for weight loss. By keeping my foods at 55 or below on the glucemic index, I've went from 181 pounds to 120, size 18 Womens to 6 petite. I listened to my doctor's suggestion about reducing caffeine intake. He recommended a book called "The Truth About Caffeine" by Kushner. Well, it's now past the three week mark and I'm really pleased at my progress. The first week was the toughest - it was so hard to get going without my ritual cup of coffee. I missed drinking coke and realized I also had to give up tea. But I stopped craving almost right away. And once the pattern - the habit - was broken, I didn't even think about it. And now, my skin is clearer, I have more energy, I'm sleeping better - and I've saved heaps of money. Most of the cash I spent during the week was related to coffee - I'd have to take out a $20 so I had cash, then I'd buy something to go with it, then I'd buy random things because I had money in my wallet. Another cycle broken! This goal was only intended to be a three week detox challenge kind of thing, but I can see it lasting much longer. So - at least for now - I'm really pleased to have caffeine out of my life.
- Review:: 'Guidlines Not a Formula This book shed a lot of light on why I was not succeding in my weight loss goals. I had already given up almost all sugar and all artifical sweetners, eating mostly whole grains, and had been doing a 45-60 min cardio workout 3 times a week and getting no where in the 50 lbs I need to lose. In the past I had a lot of success following Atkins, but felt that it was unhealthy and it left me feeling sluggish and miserable. I stopped Atkins and started the daily losing battle with my weight. After three weeks of following the basic principals I have had successful weight changes for the first time in a long time. This book is not for someone who wants a quick fix or answer, the book gives a ton of data points and strives to tell you how to use the data to make your own balance. Other people have commented that there are many contradictions, and I think the problem is that they are looking for a yes/no list or formula not a guideline and plan for moderation and balance. You also have to really understand the differneces between Glycemic Index and Glyecmic Load, which I feel she explains quite well. I doubt this diet idea will ever be popular becuase there are no quick fix answers. I have been following the plan for almost a month and feel great and can see myself doing this for the rest of my life with no hesitation. The fact that it is a guidline rather than formula gives you the ability to adjust to your stage of life, activity level and weight loss goals. There is no denying that reading this is a bit like going back to school where you need to read it, process it, and figure out how it relates to your own eating habits and weight goals. There are two down sides to this book. The first is that the first two weeks of eating that many vegetables and heavy grainy food can make you, to be blunt, gasy. The other is that she keeps suggesting margerine but I find it to be a horible low-fat alternative to butter and am ok with having more fat than chemicals. Again it is a guideline and I have the fleibilty to make as many natural and organic choices as I like and still follow the ideas.
- Review:: 'saved my sanity i was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes 4 months ago, and i had to figure out a different way of eating that would help me control my blood glucose. My doctor was intelligent enough not to simply throw a diet at me and order me to follow it, so I started doing research and discovered this book. Basically, it rates carbohydrate foods on how fast they raise the blood glucose, and encourages you to eat foods that have a less sudden and dramatic effect on it. (this is a wild oversimplification, of course.) The theory made sense to me. It's easy to substitute foods lower on the glycemic-index scale (whole grains, most veggies and fruits, foods that aren't overprocessed) for higher-GI foods, and the authors give many tips for making the change. I'm the original big appetite, but I haven't been hungry following this plan. I have lost 12 pounds and helped get my blood glucose under control. This makes sense, as the concept was developed to treat people with diabetes to begin with. My doctor is happy with my progress. I agree with the people who say that you have to use your intelligence when you follow the information in this book, but i would hate to be confined to a "diet" that tells me exactly what i have to eat when; here, i don't have to be. Best of all, this is a way of eating that I can follow for the rest of my life. Give this book a try; you'll be glad you did.
