Carmel Snow and Her Life In Fashion, Art, and Letters:
Book by Penelope Rowlands. Atria 576 pages Hardcover Published 2005-11-15. Description: Carmel Snow, who changed the course of our culture by launching the careers of some of today's greatest figures in fashion and the arts, was one of the most extraordinary women of the twentieth century. As editor in chief of Harper's Bazaar from 1934 to 1958 she championed the concept of "a well-dressed magazine for the well-dressed mind," bringing cutting-edge art, fiction, photography, and reportage into the American home. Now comes A Dash of Daring, a first and definitive biography of this larger-than-life figure in publishing, art, and letters. Veteran magazine journalist Penelope Rowlands describes the remarkable places Snow frequented and the people whose lives she transformed, among them Richard Avedon, Diana Vreeland, Geoffrey Beene, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Cristobal Balenciaga, Lauren Bacall, and Truman Capote. She chronicles Snow's life on both sides of the Atlantic, beginning in nineteenth-century Ireland and continuing to Paris, Milan, and New York City, the fashion capitals of the world. Snow was the daughter of an Irish immigrant, who was herself a forward-thinking businesswoman, and she worked in her mother's custom dressmaking shop before being discovered by the magazine publisher Conde Nast and training under Edna Woolman Chase, the famous longtime editor of Vogue. From there it was on to Harper's Bazaar which, with the help of such key employees as Avedon, Vreeland, and art director Alexei Brodovitch, Snow turned into the most admired magazine of the century. Among the disparate talents who worked at Bazaar in the Snow era were Andy Warhol, the heiress Doris Duke, Maeve Brennan, and members of the storied Algonquin Round Table. Overflowing with previously untold stories of the colorful and glamorous, A Dash of Daring is a compelling portrait of the fashion world during a golden era.
- Review:: 'A Bazaar Life When you crack open a 500 page book, it better be good. This biography of Harper's Bazaar fashion editor Carmel Snow is everything a heavy tome should be: entertaining, insightful, and thouroughly researched. The writing style is a perfect match for the subject matter: Penelope Rowlands' prose is as sharply defined as a couture garment, and, as a result, reading her book is the next best thing to actually owning a Dior original. But the most rewarding part of the book is the revelation that elegance is all about gutsiness. In fact, if you look objectively at the clothes women wore back then (the book is rife with photographic documents) all those proper little wool suits and belted silk dresses look quite frumpy in restrospect. But what poise those girls had! Where did their get their attitude? Reading A Dash of Daring is a lesson in real coolness.
- Review:: 'An exceptional biography This beautifully produced and perceptive biography of Carmel Snow, arguably the greatest fashion editor who ever lived, is a sheer delight to read. The author focuses our gaze on both the biographical subject and the milieu in which Snow lived and worked. Penelope Rowland's impressive research and extensive interviews, combined with her sure touch as a storyteller, have yielded an engaging and compelling story.
- Review:: 'Wonderful! I have bought many copies of this book to give to friends. I think it is a very special. It is a fascinating story, beautifully told. It is not just for those interested in fashion. It is a masterpiece of biography.
- Review:: 'More Than A Dash "A Dash of Daring" is a biography that offers a comprehensive look at a fashion icon. The life of Carmel Snow should interest fashion connousseurs and others alike. This reader was especialy fascinated by the detailed description of life in war-torn Paris. It is relevant to the world today.
- Review:: 'Objective or critical biography? Hardly. This book has two key faults: the author's unobjective/uncritical assessment of her subject and an asleep-at-the-wheel editor. Carmel Snow seems to have been a fascinating and complex character, but the author's apparent idol/family-worship prevented her from viewing Mrs. Snow critically. That ultimately makes the Mrs. Snow presented in this book a one-dimensional character - "Aunt Carmel who worked like a man, didn't have much time for her family, etc." It would have been interesting to know, for example, why Bazaar's circulation numbers often didn't equal Vogue's, for all of the paeans to Mrs. Snow's editorial genius. What were the real, business reasons for the housecleaning at Bazaar after Mr. Hearst died? Mrs. Snow's alcoholism was almost entirely avoided until the very end, when it was presented as "Mrs. Snow liked to have several cocktails at lunch" and then noted only as the cause of a highly embarrassing social moment. Alcoholism doesn't happen overnight, as it seems to in this book, and it would have been interested to know what effect it had on her work. The book also suffers from the want of a good editor who could have eliminated the author's juvenile asides to the reader, e.g. "how to put it", "Pace, Nigella Lawson" etc.
Book by Mary Bray Pipher. Basic Books 181 pages Paperback Published 2005-04-13. Description: Intimate and inspiring lessons from beloved author and therapist Mary Pipher Mary Pipher's groundbreaking investigation of America's "girl-poisoning culture," Reviving Ophelia, has sold nearly two million copies and established its author as one of the nation's foremost authorities on family issues. In Letters to a Young Therapist, Dr. Pipher shares what she has learned in thirty years as a therapist, helping warring families, alienated adolescents, and harried professionals restore peace and beauty to their lives. Letters to a Young Therapist gives voice to her practice with an exhilarating mix of storytelling and sharp-eyed observation. And while her letters are addressed to an imagined young therapist, every one of us can take something away from them. Long before "positive psychology" became a buzzword, Dr. Pipher practiced a refreshingly inventive therapy--fiercely optimistic, free of dogma or psychobabble, and laced with generous warmth and practical common sense. But not until now has this gifted healer described her unique perspective on how therapy can help us revitalize our emotional landscape in an increasingly stressful world. Whether she's recommending daily swims for a sluggish teenager, encouraging a timid husband to become bolder, or simply bearing witness to a bereaved parent's sorrow, Dr. Pipher's compassion and insight shine from every page of this thoughtful and engaging book.
- Review:: 'Will recommend it to clients and colleagues I will frequently recommend this book to colleagues, students, clients and friends. Much like Dr. Yalom's books this is an easy but powerful read. Dr. Pipher understands therapy at a meaningful and complete level. She even manages to present cognitive therapy in a humanistic and sensitive context! Her frequent metaphors tend to be right on the money and her observations on issues through the generations were also very enlightening. Summarily, you get the sense that there is a very authentic and experienced person writing this book and you get a rare opportunity to experience the potential of psychotherapy.
- Review:: 'A Must Have I love this book. Mary Pipher does an amazing job of teaching you without any type of lecture or textbook style writing. I have read this book over and over and over again. I keep it close by for a quick read when I have just a few minutes to read a section or two. Her writing style is so relaxing and enjoyable. Her counseling style is very humble, casual and conversational. I aspire to be a therapist like Mary Pipher.
- Review:: 'Letters to a Young Therapist by Mary Pipher Mary Pipher is an understanding therapist. The author realizes
that families solve many problems on their own. The role of a good therapist is to realize that he/she cannot eliminate all ills in the world. In addition, people have limits. The author shows examples of how a healthy person can grow and learn from an experience. People enjoy the process of working toward goals. The attainment of the goal is not always the most joyful event. Instead, it is the extensive process of socialization involved in reaching the new plateau. The author also explains that too much endurance of others permits them to be slackers. Endurance is a balancing trait which has limits. The author illustrates how fortunate children benefit by having parents able to assist in sorting through the avalanche of life's choices. She cautions writers to show up faithfully, be diligent, pay attention, tell the truth and avoid becoming too attached to the results. A good writer must learn to be dispassionate. Compassion should be coupled with clearheadedness. Lastly, the author described the importance of reflection with a reference to Charles Dickens. For every hour he wrote, Dickens would walk an hour to reflect. This book makes for good general reading. The author provides passages extolling the beauty of nature, the need for pets to complement a household and many more tidbits too numerous to enumerate here. Finally, she provides some thoughts on marriage which is defined as the triumph of faith over experience. The book would make a good addition to a personal library.
- Review:: 'Bound to become a classic! As a Social Worker in private psychotherapy practice, I find that sometimes the work can be isolating and at times I question whether I should make more of an effort to consider the latest trends in psychotherapy. Mary Pipher affirms that the classic skills that make a good therapist such as compassion, empathy, listening skills, reframing and the ability to induce a sense of calm are timeless. Furthermore, even if I wasn't a therapist I think I would still devour this book because her writing is a pleasure to read. I highly recommend it for anyone just starting their career in therapy or those who have been in the field for decades. This book is bound to become a classic!
- Review:: 'Love this book As a grad student in a counseling program, I picked up this book after hearing a portion of Ms. Pipher's interview with Diane Reams on NPR. I read this book in two evenings. It has a lot of good advice, not just for therapists, but also for clients. She has a very soft, nurturing way of writing which I found delightful. I would highly recommend this book.
