Voltaire said, "Machiavelli taught Europe the art of war; it had long been practiced, without being known." For Machiavelli, war was war, and victory the supreme aim to which all other considerations must be subordinated. The Art of War is far from an anachronism-its pages outline fundamental questions that theorists of war continue to examine today, making it essential reading for any student of military history, strategy, or theory.

Niccolò Machiavelli (1469-1527) believed The Art of War to be his most important work.

• Review:: 'The Italian Sun Tzu If warrior culture is your interest, rather than becoming a sycophant of the Eastern warrior cultures, pair this with George Bird Grinnel's Fighting Cheynne, and you will not only enrich your understanding, but bring it home.
• Review:: 'Good translation, interesting history -- -- but I found Macchiavelli's content frankly disappointing. The translation is modern and readable, I have no problem with that. The original was centuries behind Sun Tzu's book of the same name, even though Sun Tzu wrote around 500BC, 2000 years before Macchiavelli. Macchiavelli gives a bit of advice about soldierly temperament and training. There's also a brief checklist, just two pages, of strategic advice, near the end of the book. That's all that really has lasting value. The bulk of the text is taken up with the right way to position each kind of soldier and arm, rank and file, in marching order. Basically, these were detailed directions for a military parade, suited to the set-piece wars of the time, as much pageant as combat. He also goes on about the right kinds of pennants, flags, and colors to use, proper military music, how to make camp, and proper pillaging and distribution of booty. Directions on how to make camp are subject to errors, though: a measurement 1360 feet long, minus 100 feet at each end, is said to leave a row 1260 feet long rather than 1160 - perhaps an error introduced by the translator, but I tend to think not. He also takes the "reduction" and sacking of conquered towns for granted. I think Master Sun was a bit more merciful (or prgamatic), on the grounds that the wealth of newly annexed parts of the kingdom should be preserved, and the citizens kept happy enough for easy rule. With a startling lack of foresight, Macchiavelli dismisses serious use of artillery in pitched battles. Instead, he falls back on strategies of the Greeks and Romans, 1000 to 2000 years old even when he wrote. Sun Tzu's warfare had a much more modern look to it, including hit-and-run tactics that the West barely understood until the American revolution. The quality of the translation worth four or five stars, partly because of helpful notes and diagrams. It's the original work that I found weak. //wiredweird
• Review:: 'A Great First-Half Machiavelli's "The Art of War" is only half the story. To fully understand the point and purpose of these conversations, you must read Machiavelli's other and more important book: "The Prince". Both books are exercises in the logic extending from the premise that the ends justify the means. You should either obtain both books or the new volume: "The Art of War & The Prince by Machiavelli - Special Edition" which combines both books into one. Both books are important in the history of philosophy, logic, politics and strategy. Reading both helps put them in their proper context. Machiavelli's vision was always clear that success is all that is important. His detailed insights on the methods and means for achieving success, however clever and convoluted, were always right to the main point: To the victor there is fame and glory and to the loser there is humiliation and oblivion.
• Review:: 'Get ready to love the Roman's I'm an immature college student with a deep interest in military strategy. I really enjoyed this book. Before I read it i felt that the coolest thing in the history of warfare had to be the ninja or the samurai. I thought their fighting styles were the coolest thing since sliced bread. The devotion and loyalty to the shogun, etc. etc. etc. Typical geek attitude. But when i read this book, Machiavelli made such a good case about how the Roman's were the true badasses of history that this book changed my opinion about them completely. I never had an interest in the Roman's before this book, after reading it i consider their military strategy and way of life superlative to ours in a lot of ways. The one thing i didn't like this book is when it gets as specific as to describe the military formations of the Roman armies. I have no problem reading about that, but i felt the translation could have given some explanation about what Machiavelli was talking about or at least some explanation of the pictures.
• Review:: 'An interesting novel I like this book, even though, at times it was difficult for me to follow. I like the translation. I have read other translated books where I find it difficult to read the book. First, I want to say that this is the first military instruction book I have read, and second, that I read this book to find out how people fought before there were weapons of mass destruction. Therefore, I thought this book was an excellent tool in describing ancient military tactics. But even if you aren't interested in military tactics as much, this book was also interesting because I enjoy history. I thought it was going to describe how to march, train, and fight, which it did, but it also made numerous references to the actions of past military leaders. I enjoyed reading about the successes and failures of people whose names I recognized from history class. Additionally, I enjoyed the style. Niccolo uses a different style of writing then American authors, and on occasion I like to read something different. It is a good book that I would recommend to anyone who enjoys learning about history.

The text in this section includes critical commentary and notes by both the Chinese historians as well as by Giles himself. In this section are many details, such as the excerpt below, that are not included in the uncommented version.

Lionel Giles, as the Keeper of the Department of Oriental printed Books and Manuscripts of the British Museum, was uniquely qualified to translate and explain this great classic Chinese work to Western readers. First published in 1910, Giles' translation is widely considered to be the definitive English version.

• Review:: 'The Best Edition This special edition of Sun Tzu's "The Art of War" is absolutely the best edition on the market. Not only is Lionel Giles' translation widely considered to be the most readable and scholarly, this particular book gives you two copies of the famous classic: one simple direct translation from the Chinese characters (which are also included in the book) and another copy which is interspersed with extensive notes and commentary by both Lionel Giles and a several native Chinese scholars. Having two copies of the translation in one volume makes this edition a real treasure. The explanations and details, like the story of training the concubines and several other tales, are not available in the plain translations and they add immeasurably to the richness of the book. By the same token, having a plain, unadorned version in hand so you can just follow Sun Tzu's logical progression is a great plus. Having it all together in one volume is what makes this particular edition remarkable. If you are looking for the best version of Sun Tzu's "The Art of War", then look no further. This is it.

• Review:: 'Foundation of Military Science Sun Tzu's "Art of War" is truly one of the great military classics of all time. Although it is over 2000 years old, virtually all modern military academies consider it to be a cornerstone of the Military Science curriculum. Sun Tzu's attitude toward war, as an expensive and unfortunate necessity that needs to be dealt with in a rational manner, is presented from the outset and it establishes the basis for his lessons. His steps in logical progression through the essential elements: motivation, logistics, strategy, tactics and intelligence are, of course, dated. The most important element is the value of applying intelligent, rational consideration to develop the most effective course of action given the circumstances at hand. The number of absolutely essential books on warfare can probably be counted on one hand. This one is number one.
• Review:: 'Best English Version of a Great Chinese Classic This Special Edition version of "The Art of War" is by far the best version available. The versions that sell for $4.95 are stripped down translations that merely present a sketchy picture of what Sun Tzu really had to say. Unless you are an expert on ancient Chinese culture, the plain vanilla versions are next to worthless to you. There is no doubt that Lionel Giles was an expert in Oriental Literature. His judicious selection of comments by various Chinese writers clearly demonstrates his scholarship. He always presents the "best evidence" for each critical point that requires clarification. About the only way you might improve on the understanding that Giles passes on to English speaking readers would be to learn to read Chinese, become an expert in ancient Chinese culture and read Sun Tzu in Chinese; which just happens to be included in this Special Edition.
• Review:: 'First-Rate Edition The combination of the full Giles translation of Sun Tzu's famous treatise with a simple direct translation makes this edition really special. This particular edition has my highest recommendation. It fills several needs by providing the Chinese Text with a direct English translation together with the fully commented translation. After you have read the full version with all of the comments and notes, you can really appreciate the rational simplicity of Sun Tzu's thirteen chapters. Without the background that the full translation provides, most of what Sun Tzu has to say can be easily misinterpreted and applied to all manner of activities. Having access immediate access to Giles' comments and notes, without having to be burdened by it when you just want to concentrate on what Sun Tzu had to say, makes this particular edition worth every penny.
