- Review:: 'Perfect for small projects! Note: SPSS 13.0 for Windows Student Version cannot open data files containing more than 50 variables or 1,500 cases. Having said that, if you have less than 50 variables and 1,500 cases to deal with then this is the software for you. It came with a (brief) 227-page users guide that was pretty comprehensive all by itself. Order the SPSS 13.0 Guide to Data Analysis to go with it, and you have just about everything you need to fiddle with and learn the basics of statistical analysis.
- Review:: 'Excellent for SPSS and statistics students I have used this product in a research methods class and found it to perform quite well. While it may not have all the features of the full SPSS package it is more than adequate and does not require the student to pay the hefty fee of the full version.
- Review:: 'Very disappointed Beware - if you buy the student version it is not big enough to run the files necessary that you work on in class. Nowhere did it indicate on the Amazon site that it had limits of file size. Wouldn't one assume that if you are selling a "student" verson, that it will be able to run your school files? Don't buy it if you are a college student and need this software to complete your projects. I wasted $80 plus dollars. Didn't learn of its limitations until AFTER I loaded it, and when it wouldn't work found the limitation statement in the manual. Very disappointed.
- Review:: 'If your Statistics Class text uses SPSS and did not include it SPSS Student is a dremendous value: over 75% off the retail version and nearly as powerful. It is limited, but is more than adequate for most cases you will encounter in class. If you need a more advanced package, get SPSS Career Builder or SPSS Graduate Pack -- they include the full version of SPSS.
- Review:: 'not enough information from amazon I had to return this item because it was not what I needed. It is not compatible with SPSS 11 and it did not state that on the Amazon page, it also didn't state the major limitations of this product. If you need to be able to run lots of data or do certain types of functions it will not work for you. If you are in a graduate school psych or sociology program, this will probably not work for you. Go to the manufacturers site and read the specific specifications for this program before buying it.
Book by Andy Rathbone. For Dummies 432 pages Paperback Published 2004-10-08. Description: Windows XP for Dummies does a good job in its role as the flagship of the Dummies line, providing Windows novices with a guided introduction to Microsoft's latest and most feature-rich operating system for everyday computer users. Its treatment of computer, Windows, and Internet fundamentals is among the best on the market, and author Andy Rathbone has an appealing way of writing that's simultaneously fun and detail-rich. If you're a Windows novice--meaning you don't know how to undelete a file that's been sent to the Recycle Bin, or what a Web browser is, or what it means to "cut and paste" text--you will get a lot out of Rathbone's work. Some aspects of this book could be better, such as the part of the networking chapter that calls for an Ethernet hub without noting that a switch, though possibly more expensive, would do the job better, without any additional hassle. The networking coverage also does an inadequate job of explaining how to share a cable modem or DSL connection among several computers. This is a serious shortcoming, and we're getting to the point in our evolution as a society of computer users at which we can assume that everyone knows what the "Cancel" button does and would rather read about the newer, more exciting things that Windows XP can do. Even the dummies aren't that dumb anymore. But that said--and Rathbone does confine a lot of the really elementary stuff to a skinny introductory chapter--this book is a boon to people who aren't familiar with Windows XP or its immediate predecessors (including Windows 95, Windows 98, and Windows Me). It's also great for people who have learned a little about Windows on the job or from their kids, and want to expand on what they know. --David Wall Topics covered: Microsoft Windows XP for people completely unfamiliar with the operating system and other recent versions of Windows. Coverage includes how to run programs, move and delete files, connect to the Internet, and use applications like electronic mail programs, Web browsers, and multimedia players.Description: Windows is the world’s most popular operating system, and Windows For Dummies is the bestselling computer book ever. When you look at Windows XP For Dummies, 2nd Edition, it’s easy to see why. Here’s all the stuff you want to know, served up in plain English and seasoned with a few chuckles. But make no mistake, this book means business. Author Andy Rathbone listened to what you wanted to know, and this edition is loaded with additional information about - E-mail, faxing, and troubleshooting
- Maximizing security features
- Customizing and upgrading Windows XP
- Multimedia applications—CDs, digital music and photos, video, and more
- Answers to questions asked by thousands of Windows users
If you’re just getting started with Windows XP, you’ll find Windows XP For Dummies, 2nd Edition is a lot easier than trying to get the fourth-grader next door to explain it to you. (Andy Rathbone is a lot more patient.) There’s a whole section devoted to “Windows XP Stuff Everybody Thinks You Already Know,” so you can get the hang of the basics quickly and in the privacy of your own home. And if you’ve been around a couple of generations of Windows, you’ll be especially interested in how to squeeze maximum security from the beefed-up anti-spam and firewall features in Service Pack 2. Windows XP For Dummies, 2nd Edition is sort of like a buffet—you can sample everything, or just stick with the stuff you know you like. You’ll find out how to - Locate programs and files, organize your information, and fax, scan, or print documents
- Get online safely, send and receive e-mail, work with Internet Explorer’s security toolbar, and steer clear of pop-ups, viruses, and spam
- Make Windows XP work the way you want it to, share your computer while maintaining your privacy, set up a network, and perform routine maintenance
- Transfer and organize pictures from your digital camera, edit digital video, and create custom CDs of your favorite tunes
- Use Windows XP’s troubleshooting wizards and become your own computer doctor
With its task-oriented table of contents and tear-out cheat sheet, Windows XP For Dummies, 2nd Edition is easy to use. You can quickly find what you want to know, and you just may discover that this book is as important to your computer as the power cord.
- Review:: 'Dummy No More This book is well written and well laid out. It can be used as a reference or as a learning tool for those less knowledgeable on computer stuff. I just advanced from Windows 98 and this made the leap/transition much easier and less confounding.
- Review:: '"REAL DUMMIE" BEFORE..WITH THIS BOOK,MAKES A BEGINNER FEEL LESS LIKE A "DUMMIE" MY FIRST COMPUTER...(DID NOT HELP THAT THE COMPUTER WAS A LEMON, AND THE COMPANY REPLACED IT)I NOT ONLY DID NOT UNDERSTAND "COMPUTER" LANGUAGE, I DID NOT EVEN KNOW HOW TO TURN IT OFF WITH OR WITHOUT POWER-BUTTON. ANY ONE WANTING TO KNOW "HOW TO" SHOULD GET THIS BOOK. LIKE IT SAYS..YOU DON'T SIT AND READ IT LIKE A NOVEL...YOU HAVE A QUESTION...YOU LOOK IT UP IN THE BOOK...NOW IF SOMEONE WOULD COME UP WITH A COMPUTER DICTIONARY FOR ALL THE TERMS ETC. USED IN "COMPUTER LANGUAGE"
! BUY THIS...YOU WON'T REGRET IT!
- Review:: 'Its not a teaching book. The book for the most part is having a discussion with you about Windows XP. Offering comments or critiques. It is not a book that I would recommend for learning via book. A Few areas actually go into depth. I see it as a [PowerPoint]Create? presentation discussion about basics XP and should have been sold as. It lacked detail in networking and wireless needed for many user/owner issues.
- Review:: 'Windows XP For Dummies, 2nd Edition As stated and well known to most, the "...For Dummies" series of books is aimed at beginners. That doesn't take away from the valuable information that is included in their send up of Windows XP and believe or not I still refer to it for it's other stated purpose - "a reference for the rest of us." Because of the nature and audience level of expertise, IT STILL IS a fantastic basic reference and I have used it to find broader subjects and to narrow my search in both my higher level references on XP - "Windows XP: The Missing Manual" and "Windows XP Inside Out Second Deluxe Edition". Using a computer and a new operating system is like riding a bike. The Dummies series are the ones to get when you still need training wheels on flat ground. It makes the basis of knowledge found in more advanced references (ones that are well written, anyway as the two I've mentioned)easier to understand and become proficient and confidentwith the subject matter at higher levels. I think the book is worth the cost when you're first starting out. John Row
- Review:: 'a life line in deep water If you don't know diddly about computers like me when I got mine, don't think you're going to sit down and fool around with one for an hour and have it all figured out. You will find yourself many times looking at the screen wondering what you are looking at and what it all means and what you are supposed to do with it. And, the computer world seems to assume you already know all kinds of deep stuff, and when they offer instructions (they call it "help") you don't even understand what the "help" is talking about. This book spells it out plainly in the language we use every day talking about normal things. If you are a commoner like me, if you don't have a book like this you are going to waste very many frustrating, bewildering hours trying to catch on. Also, the book will make you aware of Windows features that are not obvious and that you probably won't discover very soon just by pecking around. Andy Rathbone is funny, and the book is easy and enjoyable to read. If you are finding yourself in deep water like I did, then I recommend it.
