Cover of ISBN 0060009373The RealAge(R) Workout
Maximum Health, Minimum Work:
Book by Michael F. Roizen and Tracy Hafen. Collins 240 pages Hardcover Published 2006-04-01. Description:

Dr. Michael F. Roizen has empowered thousands of Americans to take control of their own destinies. How? His best-selling books, [RealAge]Create?®, The [RealAge]Create?® Makeover, and YOU: The Owner's Manual, have helped people reverse their chronological aging by ten, fifteen, and up to twenty-nine years by revealing simple lifestyle changes that have profound effects that control their genes -- and thus control their health and the aging process.

Chances are you picked up this book because you, too, want to be healthier and younger. The [RealAge]Create?® Workout explains the importance of gradually phasing exercise into your everyday routine, because even the smallest changes in behavior can make you feel, look, and be younger. No matter how busy your schedule, Dr. Michael Roizen will show you how to gain the maximum age-reduction benefits from a minimum amount of time and effort.

Before you take your first step, The [RealAge]Create?® Workout offers a series of calculations that factor in age, genetics, and lifestyle so you can determine your overall status of health and create a program to help you plan and execute your goals. The [RealAge]Create?® Workout then begins with a simple, yet life-changing premise -- just by walking 30 minutes a day, every day, you can roll back the years, significantly improve the status of your overall health, and have more energy to work and do the things you love.

After you've adjusted to this change in your lifestyle, The [RealAge]Create?® Workout will guide you through a series of training phases during which you will steadily develop your foundation muscles and eventually add a stamina-building program to help you maintain improved health. You will learn how to lift weights safely and effectively through step-by-step instructions with photographs and easy-to-understand explanations. Additionally, there are charts that help you determine the [RealAge]Create? effect -- the number of biological years younger you become with each change you make.

Along the way, The [RealAge]Create?® Workout dis-cusses common myths, addresses frequently asked questions pertaining to age and lifestyle choices, and offers tips to actually enjoy, yes, even love, exercise. So get ready to achieve optimal health and be as young as you can be!

      • Review:: 'The Best Workout Ever This is the best and easiest to follow and makes sense.
      • Review:: 'Super Job! Data driven, right on the money, no guarantees except that hard work in all likelihood will produce results!
      • Review:: 'A winner; recommend without reservation First some context: My wife and I have been reading, applying, and reviewing physical fitness books for about nine months now ("see All My Reviews"). We didn't plan to carry on so long but with appreciative feedback from friends and acquaintances we haven't been able to stop! As always, keep this in mind ... we aren't gunning for the Olympics or super-model status. We're just average, middle age people interested in life-long fitness for health and weight control reasons. Your goals may differ from ours. The [RealAge]Create? Workout is a new release and we rate it somewhat higher than another book we like, Harley Pasternak's Five Factor Fitness. In fact it's the first book to come along that we can rank as high as our long running favorite, Joe X by Avery Hunicutt. There's a lot of philosophical similarity to [RealAge]Create? and Joe X, but the presentations are vastly different. [RealAge]Create? is excellent for fitness beginners and those that are very "numbers-driven," while Joe X will be appreciated more by those with some fitness experience and may now struggle with boredom or burnout. If by chance you are familiar with the popular health guru and author Andrew Weil, both [RealAge]Create? and Joe X provide workouts that are consistent with Weil's Healthy Aging message. If you click on "search inside" you'll see the [RealAge]Create? workout is made up of four phases, each 30 days long. Phase 1: Walk 30 minutes/day Phase 2: Add 7-10 minutes of core strength training, every other day Phase 3: Add 8-10 minutes of non-core strength training, every other day Phase 4: Add 21 minutes of aerobic exercise 3 times/week The book details modifications to the phases for people that are not beginners but is adamant that everyone start at phase 1 and progress in sequence. The author prefers dumbbells over barbells or weight machines. Both free-weights and weight machines are presented in the exercise descriptions. The descriptions are good and a nice reference for whatever program you subscribe to. The book details a comprehensive pre-test that is recommended before beginning phase 1. In addition to detailed descriptions of strength exercises, warm-up/stretch exercises are also provided. A significant difference between [RealAge]Create? and Joe X is Joe X puts more focus on breathing technique to the point of synchronizing it to your exercise form. (It probably doesn't make a physiolgical difference but it does seem to help with the mental challenge of staying fit.) A [RealAge]Create? workout, if followed to the letter, will on average be somewhat longer than a Five Factor or Joe X workout. All are typically 5-day/week regimens. Almost no question will be left unanswered. Instructions are detailed and complete. Though [RealAge]Create? is actually a collaboration of authors, the presentation is consistent, clear, and concise. We liked the professional writing style but at times found the fixation on linking the workout to Dr. Roizen's numbers driven "real age" concept irritating. It smacks of being a marketing gimmick, though we have to admit it's a pretty effective one! Who doesn't want to be told their real age is actually younger than their chronological age? We don't plan on changing our own routine as we are quite satisfied with results but The [RealAge]Create? Workout is a great and safe way to get started on your physical fitness program.
      • Review:: 'If you care about your health It's an excellent book to support and maintain your health. The [RealAge]Create? Workout contains comprehensive explainations, step-by-step instructions with photos, charts, and great tips to stay healthy and younger. If you care so much about yourself, I'm sure this book will help you all the way.
      • Review:: 'The [RealAge]Create? Workout : Maximum Health, Minimum Work I really liked this book-take home message you don't have to kill yourself to get results. It's the little things over time that will improve your health and outlook on life. Very easy to use and can really start at any phase and get results. Bottom line keep on exercising no matter how little each day and watch your real age numbers fall!

The New Glucose Revolution- The Authoritative Guide to the Glycemic Index--the Dietary Solution for Lifelong Health

The Authoritative Guide to the Glycemic Index--the Dietary Solution for Lifelong Health:
Book by Jennie Brand-Miller, Thomas M.S. Wolever, Kaye Foster-Powell and Stephen Colagiuri. Marlowe & Company 304 pages Paperback Published 2002-12-10. Description: Forget the high-carb, low-carb debate. The glycemic index (GI)--a measure of carbohydrate quality based on how quickly a food raises blood-glucose (blood sugar) levels--is the dietary key to health, say the authors. Contrary to other diets that treat carbohydrates as all alike, The New Glucose Revolution divides carbos according to their GI into two categories. One is high GI (less desirable): carbohydrates that break down quickly during digestion, leading to fast and high blood-glucose response. Examples are baked potatoes, sports bars, instant rice, corn flakes cereal, and baguettes. The other is low GI (more desirable): carbohydrates that break down slowly during digestion, leading to a gradual glucose release. Examples here are pasta, whole grains, fruit, legumes, and yams.

A low-GI diet is especially recommended for people with diabetes, abdominal overweight, and Syndrome X, say the authors, who have strong medical, nutritional-science, and diabetes education credentials. They explain the importance of understanding GI values, how GI is determined, health applications, and how to choose low-GI foods and balance the overall GI load. They give cooking tips, menu ideas, and 47 recipes. A 68-page table gives the GI values of many foods, including brand names. The New Glucose Revolution is recommended for health-conscious readers who want to understand the glycemic index and how to incorporate it into their diet. --Joan Price Description: (Marlowe and Company) Consumer text provides an introduction to the glycemic index and provides tables for more than 800 foods to determine their effect on blood glucose levels. Discusses the benefits of low-GI foods for weight loss, blood sugar control, reduced risk of heart disease, and management of Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes. Previous edition: c2002. Softcover.

      • Review:: 'Mega Weight loss! My doctor recommended this book for weight loss. By keeping my foods at 55 or below on the glucemic index, I've went from 181 pounds to 120, size 18 Womens to 6 petite. I listened to my doctor's suggestion about reducing caffeine intake. He recommended a book called "The Truth About Caffeine" by Kushner. Well, it's now past the three week mark and I'm really pleased at my progress. The first week was the toughest - it was so hard to get going without my ritual cup of coffee. I missed drinking coke and realized I also had to give up tea. But I stopped craving almost right away. And once the pattern - the habit - was broken, I didn't even think about it. And now, my skin is clearer, I have more energy, I'm sleeping better - and I've saved heaps of money. Most of the cash I spent during the week was related to coffee - I'd have to take out a $20 so I had cash, then I'd buy something to go with it, then I'd buy random things because I had money in my wallet. Another cycle broken! This goal was only intended to be a three week detox challenge kind of thing, but I can see it lasting much longer. So - at least for now - I'm really pleased to have caffeine out of my life.
      • Review:: 'Guidlines Not a Formula This book shed a lot of light on why I was not succeding in my weight loss goals. I had already given up almost all sugar and all artifical sweetners, eating mostly whole grains, and had been doing a 45-60 min cardio workout 3 times a week and getting no where in the 50 lbs I need to lose. In the past I had a lot of success following Atkins, but felt that it was unhealthy and it left me feeling sluggish and miserable. I stopped Atkins and started the daily losing battle with my weight. After three weeks of following the basic principals I have had successful weight changes for the first time in a long time. This book is not for someone who wants a quick fix or answer, the book gives a ton of data points and strives to tell you how to use the data to make your own balance. Other people have commented that there are many contradictions, and I think the problem is that they are looking for a yes/no list or formula not a guideline and plan for moderation and balance. You also have to really understand the differneces between Glycemic Index and Glyecmic Load, which I feel she explains quite well. I doubt this diet idea will ever be popular becuase there are no quick fix answers. I have been following the plan for almost a month and feel great and can see myself doing this for the rest of my life with no hesitation. The fact that it is a guidline rather than formula gives you the ability to adjust to your stage of life, activity level and weight loss goals. There is no denying that reading this is a bit like going back to school where you need to read it, process it, and figure out how it relates to your own eating habits and weight goals. There are two down sides to this book. The first is that the first two weeks of eating that many vegetables and heavy grainy food can make you, to be blunt, gasy. The other is that she keeps suggesting margerine but I find it to be a horible low-fat alternative to butter and am ok with having more fat than chemicals. Again it is a guideline and I have the fleibilty to make as many natural and organic choices as I like and still follow the ideas.
      • Review:: 'saved my sanity i was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes 4 months ago, and i had to figure out a different way of eating that would help me control my blood glucose. My doctor was intelligent enough not to simply throw a diet at me and order me to follow it, so I started doing research and discovered this book. Basically, it rates carbohydrate foods on how fast they raise the blood glucose, and encourages you to eat foods that have a less sudden and dramatic effect on it. (this is a wild oversimplification, of course.) The theory made sense to me. It's easy to substitute foods lower on the glycemic-index scale (whole grains, most veggies and fruits, foods that aren't overprocessed) for higher-GI foods, and the authors give many tips for making the change. I'm the original big appetite, but I haven't been hungry following this plan. I have lost 12 pounds and helped get my blood glucose under control. This makes sense, as the concept was developed to treat people with diabetes to begin with. My doctor is happy with my progress. I agree with the people who say that you have to use your intelligence when you follow the information in this book, but i would hate to be confined to a "diet" that tells me exactly what i have to eat when; here, i don't have to be. Best of all, this is a way of eating that I can follow for the rest of my life. Give this book a try; you'll be glad you did.
