The Metabolic Typing Diet- Customize Your Diet to Your Own Unique Body Chemistry

Cover of ISBN 0767905644The Metabolic Typing Diet
Customize Your Diet to Your Own Unique Body Chemistry:
Book by William Linz Wolcott and Trish Fahey. Broadway 448 pages Paperback Published 2002-01-02. Description: People are unique in more ways than we can see. Stomachs and other internal organs come in many different shapes and sizes. Digestive juices, too, can vary dramatically from one person to another. Thus, according to author William Linz Wolcott, founder of Healthexcel, a company that provides metabolic typing for individuals, it stands to reason that different foods have very different effects on different people.

Wolcott believes that tailoring your diet to your body's particular quirks--metabolic typing--will improve digestion, circulation, immunity, energy, and mood. To determine your type, he has you take a 65-question test (the questions range from nose moisture to how you feel about potatoes), then place yourself in one of three categories: protein type, carbo type, or mixed type.

The protein type is instructed to eat a diet that's 40 percent protein, 30 percent fat, and 30 percent carbs. The carbo type gets 60 percent carbs, 25 percent protein, and 15 percent fat. And the mixed type should consume 50 percent carbs, 30 percent protein, and 20 percent fat, although this type has to play with the ratios a little more to find the optimal mix.

Although The Metabolic Typing Diet is based on information from researchers the majority of the public will never have heard of, Wolcott makes a strong case that it's all based on common sense: most of the dietary problems we have come from ignoring the foods that make us feel satisfied and energetic in favor of ones that we feel we're supposed to eat, or foods that we eat in desperation because our last meal left us hungry or lethargic. If we just eat the foods that make us feel right, Wolcott argues, we'll never feel like things have gone horribly wrong. --Lou SchulerDescription: Customize Your Diet to Your Own Unique Body Chemistry

For hereditary reasons, your metabolism is unique. Cutting-edge research shows that no single diet works well for everyone–the very same foods that keep your best friend slim may keep you overweight and feeling unhealthy and fatigued. Now, William Wolcott, a pioneer in the field of metabolic research, has developed a revolutionary weight-loss program that allows you to identify your "metabolic type" and create a diet that suits your individual nutritional needs.

In The Metabolic Typing Diet, Wolcott and acclaimed science writer Trish Fahey provide simple self-tests that you can use to discover your own metabolic type and determine what kind of diet will work best for you. It might be a low-fat, high carbohydrate diet filled with pasta and grains, or a high-fat, high-protein diet focused on meat and seafood, or anything in between. By detailing exactly which foods and food combinations are right for you, The Metabolic Typing Diet at last reveals the secret to shedding unwanted pounds and achieving optimum vitality with lasting results.

The Metabolic Typing Diet will enable you to:
Achieve and maintain your ideal weight
Eliminate sugar cravings
Enjoy sustained energy and endurance
Conquer indigestion, fatigue, and allergies
Bolster your immune system
Overcome anxiety, depression, and mood swings

      • Review:: 'The book that helped me most! All my life, I have been non-typical in my health issues. I had allergies to variable foods when I was a kid, it took two weeks each to diagnose my atypical pneumonia and hepatitis in grade school, I had adenitis? and rheumatoid arthritis? after I got married, etc. I have therefore always been in search of some method to make me stronger and healthier since conventional approach came short in many of my problems. This book not only shows a path for better health, but also explains why! I have benefited a lot from its teachings. Thanks a lot and congradulations, Bill Walcott and Trish Fahey!
      • Review:: 'The Metabolic Typing Diet I am retired, 72, and in not-so-good health; not bad, but not-so-good. I have been reading The Metabolic Typing Diet book for a few weeks and have been instituting several of the recommendations. I can see and feel vital improvement in my health condition versus what I had to start with. I recommend using this book as a follow-on to Dr. Mercola's Total Health Program book. I recomend these books and their information and processes for individual work and for small groups.
      • Review:: 'I know my type but not what to eat. I thought the idea of this book was great. It provides good justification on why people need to eat differently. It presents a good starting point to determine what type you are in metabolically . The book fell apart for me in the follow through. I have no better understanding of exactly what I should be eating. I do know that I should not be eating chocolate, caffeine and alcohol, along with certain other foods, that we have been told years ago are bad for us. Overall, I think this book needs to be re-written to more current understandings of food. I think that the book needs to provide more exact information on what each type should eat so it would actually be useful.
      • Review:: 'What is all the fuss about? This book is brilliant!! As a nutritionist it is the missing link. Whether Wolcott is the founder or not isn't the issue. Besides he talks about the pioneers in chapter 2. This book is like a novel that I find hard to put down. Highly recommended.
      • Review:: 'A knock-off of several other methods... At first I was impressed...with the concept. However, the testing proves to be very wishy-washy as my reactions to food aren't usually general, and they can change over time. That made it very difficult for me to determine my type. I just follow 50/30/20 and Burn the Fat, Feed the Muscle and adjust to 40/40/20 (by listening to my body) with excellent results! He recommends a Zone diet (40/30/30), Tom Venuto's basic 50/30/20 ratio, and a 65/25/15 ratio, which is the old ratio for bodybuilders back in the day! You could find these ratios on the internet for FREE. Metabolic types do indeed exist, but the probably of matching the extremes isn't too great. Mixed is basically everything that's not Carb/Protein type, which can leave many of us stranded and not knowing what to do next or even how to go about it...including me. Now, I just follow 50/30/20 (BFFM) to start and sometimes adjust to 40/40/20 (by listening to my body) with excellent results! Finding your metabolic type is PROBABLY not as simple as answering a questionnaire. Rather, you start from a balanced point of view and lean towards one side or the other--whichever makes you feel better. This way you'll learn to listen to your body. Also, calories do count...basically just reduce intake of all refined foods (eliminate sugar and trans fats) and exercise 4-6 times every day for at least half an hour. Make sure to include cardio AND weightlifting! Your body will thank you. I recommend Tom Venuto's ebook, Burn the Fat, Feed the Muscle or Rob Faigin's Natural Hormonal Enhancement. Both are excellent reads. They are both very credible authors, as I have NOT found with Wolcott. I'd prefer to follow the advice of someone who has followed their own advice (not sure if Wolcott does). However, I do agree that the food choices he recommends are better than the refined, sugar-filled, chemically overloaded foods that Americans (and some of the rest of the world) typically eat.

Organic Chemistry 1 as a Second Language- Translating the Basic Concepts

Cover of ISBN 0471272353Organic Chemistry 1 as a Second Language
Translating the Basic Concepts:
Book by David R. Klein. Wiley 320 pages Paperback Published 2003-10-22. Description: Organic chemistry may be challenging, but that doesn’t mean you can’t get the grade you want. This book points out the major principles in organic chemistry and explains why they are relevant to the rest of the course. It provides time-saving study tips and a clear roadmap for your studies that will help you focus your efforts. And it helps you develop the skills you need to solve a variety of problems types—even unfamiliar ones!
      • Review:: 'Organice Chemistry I as a Second Language: Translating the Basic Concepts I purchased this book prior to taking General and Organic Chemistry. I thought I would be able to get a jump start on the class. It appears as though this book will be an excellent reference book to use along with the class textbook and lectures. So, for the time being I've have to put this book aside until I take the class.
      • Review:: 'Extremely helpful! I did the chapter on substitution (Sn1 and Sn2) reactions in this book the night before my o-chem test (I wouldn't recommend doing that, by the way). It explained everything so clearly that I only had to do a few practice problems out of the book before I felt pretty confident about doing them. It's helpful that he breaks down the reasons that you're doing the things he's teaching, as opposed to a textbook that gives so many facts you don't know what's what. I didn't have this book the first 2 weeks of the semester and I really thought that I would fail the course if I didn't get some kind of help...then my friend showed me this book and I did some problems from her's before I bought my own. I've basically learned all of the concepts so far in the course through this book. It doesn't go into great detail, but after mastering the fundamentals, the rest is just practice. It's really helpful also that you can write directly in the book as you practice what he's teaching you. So, with this book and plenty of practice you'll be a pro!
      • Review:: 'Clear examples and straight-forward This book is terrific. It's paperback and small so you have no excuse not to take it to school every day. Further, it's easy to hide it from your lecturer's eyes when you're bored with the lecture. By no means does the book replace your textbook, but it hones your rudimentary recognition and drawing skills so the rest comes easy. David Klein writes in a very matter-of-fact, this is what you must know to succeed in o-chem, style and is cognizant of student pitfalls and common misconceptions. The examples every 3-5 pages are a great way to continually test yourself and break the monotony of reading. He provides short examples to illustrate his points but doesn't drone on any topic -- again, you should utilize your text for more information. I read the 1st 50 pages in class while we reviewed gen-chem from the previous semester (Zzzzzz....) and found the introduction to alkanes and long carbon chains to be a breeze. This book came highly recommended from a friend of mine and additionally by our current o-chem prof -- and I can vouch as well that this is a must-have if you wish to supplement your text and study efficiently (i.e. do well in the course).
      • Review:: 'great The book was in great condition and the book arrived during at a reasonable time
      • Review:: 'Excellent books This is a great study aid to supplement your organic text book. It takes you by the hand and walks you through some of the most difficult concepts in organic chemistry. I bought this book and the Organic Chemistry II as a Second Language. I didn't understand organic chem when I first took it (about 5 years ago). But now it is really clear and starting to seem somewhat easy. It has given me the confidence to tackle more difficult problems in the text book. Thank you so much Dr. Klein. I wish he taught at my university.
