American Idols- The Worship of the American Dream

Cover of ISBN 080544078XAmerican Idols
The Worship of the American Dream:
Book by Bob Hostetler. B&H Publishing Group 235 pages Paperback Published 2006-01. Description: Although not inherently corrupt, the American Idol television program has magnified a culture preoccupied with fleeting fame and image overload. Feeding off that frenzy, American Idols takes a necessary look at the false gods in modern society. The golden calf of Bible times may be gone, but in its place today are enslavements to consumerism, celebrity, sexual freedom, easy religion, and more. This timely book helps readers realize and overcome their own idolatries.
      • Review:: 'Good topic gone terribly wrong I read this book for a recent church campaign and the more I read the more I really didn't like it. The author isn't a good writer and he takes things to the wrong extreme. The only thing of value I took from reading this when he referenced someone else talking about needing a Paul, Timothy and Barnabas in your life.
      • Review:: 'A New Perspective on American Priorities If you've ever looked at our culture and wondered why in the world it got this way, Bob Hostetler's book, American Idols The Worship of the American Dream, addresses the cultural and personal values that created it. Well-written, thoughtful, and easy to read, the book addresses the things we really think are important: how we look, what we have, comfort, instant gratification, choice, financial success...our modern American idols. As a mass media professor for the last 25 years, the book `rang true' in the fact that most of those `idols' are based on short-term satisfaction, what we can understand at the moment, and what "works" for us, because I teach about how those `idols' are consistently represented in modern media. Bob brings the discussion down to everyday experience and shows us very clearly how we may be accepting and creating idols without recognizing what we're doing. A few years ago I placed The New Tolerance (by Bob Hostetler and Josh [McDowell]Create?) on my recommended reading list for two of my undergraduate media courses, and like that book, this one is an easy read but with lots `meat' to really get a reader thinking about important issues. The students who chose to read it thoroughly enjoyed it and obviously learned a great deal from it. I expect the student reaction will be just as enthusiastic when I place American Idols on that recommended list this fall. While this book is written from a Christian perspective and would be perfect for study groups and Christian discipleship classes, it has strong cultural applications for every American. It has a lot to say about who we are as a people and a culture, and it challenges us to face the fact that we all should probably examine why we are the way we are. American Idols The Worship of the American Dream is one of those special books on my shelf that will soon be well-worn and filled with multi-colored hi-lighting because I will refer to it again and again. It can be read, understood and have practical impact on the lives of teenagers, young adults, and those of us who are a little older than that. It is well-written, substantive, and grounded in the Word of God. Bob Hostetler shares new perspective and real truth about the idols of our culture in a down-to-earth, engaging way that motivates serious consideration about what we really think is important and why. This book is a valuable investment in time, money and contemplation. I strongly recommend it to students, teachers, parents and anyone interested how we determine our personal and cultural priorities.
      • Review:: 'Challenging, yet easy to digest This book is clear, concise, and very direct. The author has a way of placing truth in a context that is easy to understand and even better, easy to digest. I believe this book to be completely God inspired and I thoroughly enjoyed the challenge in every chapter.I absolutely loved it-so much so I have decided to start a study with some people from work. The author has group studies available on his website at www.bobhostetler.com. I can't wait to see how much more God reveals to me through them.
      • Review:: 'clear and on point I had always known people tend toward idolatry. This easy-to-read (because well written) book brought the issue sharply into focus for me. It is worse than I care to admit. Thankfully he doesn't stop there. He knows how to make things right. I want to use it in Sunday school as soon as possible.

Huckleberry Finn As Idol and Target - The Functions of Criticism in Our Time (The Wisconsin Project on American Writers)

Cover of ISBN 029915534XHuckleberry Finn As Idol and Target
The Functions of Criticism in Our Time (The Wisconsin Project on American Writers):
Book by Jonathan Arac. University of Wisconsin Press 240 pages Paperback Published 1997-11. Description: If racially offensive epithets are banned on CNN air time and in the pages of USA Today, Jonathan Arac asks, shouldnt a fair hearing be given to those who protest their use in an eighth-grade classroom? Placing Mark Twains comic masterpiece, Huckleberry Finn, in the context of long-standing American debates about race and culture, Jonathan Arac has written a work of scholarship in the service of citizenship. Huckleberry Finn, Arac points out, is Americas most beloved book, assigned in schools more than any other work because it is considered both the quintessential American novel and an important weapon against racism. But when some parents, students, and teachers have condemned the books repeated use of the word nigger, their protests have been vehemently and often snidely countered by cultural authorities, whether in the universities or in the New York Times and the Washington Post. The paradoxical result, Arac contends, is to reinforce racist structures in our society and to make a sacred text of an important book that deserves thoughtful reading and criticism. Arac does not want to ban Huckleberry Finn, but to provide a context for fairer, fuller, and better-informed debates. Arac shows how, as the Cold War began and the Civil Rights movement took hold, the American critics Lionel Trilling, Henry Nash Smith, and Leo Marx transformed the public image of Twains novel from a popular boys book to a central document of American culture. Hucks feelings of brotherhood with the slave Jim, it was implied, represented all that was right and good in American culture and democracy. Drawing on writings by novelists, literary scholars, journalists, and historians, Arac revisits the era of the novels setting in the 1840s, the period in the 1880s when Twain wrote and published the book, and the postWorld War II era, to refute many deeply entrenched assumptions about Huckleberry Finn and its place in cultural history, both nationally and globally. Encompassing discussion of Harriet Beecher Stowe, Frederick Douglass, Ralph Ellison, Archie Bunker, James Baldwin, Shelley Fisher Fishkin, and Mark Fuhrman, Aracs book is trenchant, lucid, and timely.
      • Review:: 'Good idea spoiled by academic snobbery If this book is supposed to provide "a context for fairer, fuller, and better-informed debates" on Huckelberry Finn, then the only people the author must think are doing the debating are cloistered academics. The issue frequently under debate is whether to "ban" Huck Finn from classrooms because of the infamous "N-word." This issue therefore begins and ends with secondary and high school parents and teachers. Academics with PHd's have little to nothing to do with this debate in the real world other than to provide sound-bites for the media. The people who need this type of book, the non-academic parents and students who will end up having do live with the results of the debate need not look to Arac's text except as a sleeping pill. What could have been a very lively reading on a stimulating subject is submerged by the author with the usual academic psycho-babble. Weigh this book against Shelly Fisher-Fishkin's popular and highly accessible "Was Huck Black?" and "Lighting Out for the Territory" and you can see why the pro-Twain faction always comes out looking better even if they lose the debate. Arac's book is inaccessible to the average parent (black or white) who must continually resort to a reactionary mode when faced with the prospect that their child will have to see and hear the word "nigger" when Huck Finn is assigned in class. As a result this is hardly a work of "scholarship in the service of citizenship." It is a work of scholarship in the service of exclusive academia only. I'm not saying that the book should have been "dumbed down" for use by the average reader, but that the text reeks of stereotypical academic snobbery. As Huck Finn himself might have said, "This book puts on airs." It's a pity becasue Arac raises some good points, which are unfortunately lost in ten dollar words and page length sentences.
