Principles of Helicopter Aerodynamics (Cambridge Aerospace Series)

Book by J. Gordon Leishman. Cambridge University Press 864 pages Hardcover Published 2006-04-24. Description: This book is a modern treatment of the aerodynamic principles of helicopters and rotating-wing vertical lift aircraft. Part one covers the technical history of helicopter flight, basic methods of rotor aerodynamics, and performance-related design issues. Part two contains advanced topics in helicopter aerodynamics, including airfoil flows, unsteady aerodynamics, dynamic stall, rotor wakes, and rotor-airframe aerodynamic interactions. Part three contains chapters on autogiros and advanced aerodynamic analysis and a new chapter on the aerodynamics of wind turbines. The book is extensively illustrated and contains homework problems.
      • Review:: 'A must have for all rotorcraft engineers As an aerospace engineer I have read many books on rotorcraft and I must admit that this is the most up to date and useful text on rotorcraft that I have had the pleasure to read. There are many aspects of the text that stand out, however the one I found most useful, especially as a graduate student, was that the equations are derived from engineering basics and are accompanied by clear explanations of the principles involved. The text and equations are also supplimented by clear diagrams that serve to enhance understanding of the more complex topics covered. All in all a great book and one that I would highly recommend to both rotorcraft students and practicing engineers alike.

Fundamentals of Aerodynamics (Mcgraw-Hill Series in Aeronautical and Aerospace Engineering)

Book by John D. Anderson. [McGraw]Create?-Hill Science/Engineering/Math 1032 pages Hardcover Published 2005-10-26. Description: In keeping with its bestselling previous editions, Fundamentals of Aerodynamics, fourth edition, offers the most readable, interesting, and up-to-date overview of aerodynamics to be found in any text. The classic organization of the text has been preserved, with new standalone viscous flow sections at the end of various chapters to conceptualize the coverage of this topic in part 4, and complement discussion of fundamental principles in part 1, inviscid incompressible flow in part 2, and inviscid compressible flow in part 3.

Historical topics, carefully developed examples, numerous illustrations, and a wide selection of chapter problems are found throughout the text to motivate and challenge students of aerodynamics.

      • Review:: 'Outstanding With no doubt this is the best Aerodynamics book for college students ever written...ever!Very clear explanations, full of examples and a good set of exercises to challenge your understanding of the subject. The only negative point is that there no answers to the problems.
      • Review:: 'Decent textbook This book needs a good professor to go along with it. The examples have little to do with many things in the text and the book fails to emphasize which concepts are the most important.
      • Review:: 'Note that the 4th edition is out; info is on the [McGraw]Create?-Hill website; Fundamentals of Aerodynamics By: Anderson, John D. Edition:4 1032 pages ISBN 0072950463Pub Date: 2005-10-26 Copyright: 2007 $149.06 USD
      • Review:: 'Very good introductory textbook This is by far the best textbook I had on any subject of my aerospace eng. undergrad degree. Presentation of concepts is concise and examples are clear and easy to follow. The text is enriched by the inclusion of design boxes which explain a few key areas in the design of various interesting aircraft. If you don't like your textbook for whatever reason, don't hesitate to get this one and it'll certainly help you understand this subject well.
      • Review:: 'Excellent Aerospace Engineering Reference This excellent book is full of examples and equations to help students relate to the fundamental concepts in an introductory aerodynamics class.

The book is especially useful for reference, as it explains the derivations and many forms of complex equations such as the continuity equation. Furthermore, there are lots of examples of real-world design situations and historical backgrounds.

Overall, one of the best books I have used in my undergraduate aerospace engineering curriculum.
